The CVMVCD BioControl Facility has been specifically designed to
research the application of biological control organisms of vectors, such as mosquitofish, desert pupfish, tadpole shrimp, copepods, etc.
The facility will consist of a 5590 square foot building with outdoor
production and evaluation facilities located on a 10-acre area on the CVMVCD
facility grounds.
The
building will house office, laboratory, an aquarium room, rearing rooms
and microscopic/technical resources available to district staff. An indoor
mass production recirculation system will assist indoor aquaculture. The outdoor
facilities will be comprised of earthen ponds and concrete tubs to provide
outdoor rearing environments for the raising of aquatic species (Desert Pupfish, Mosquitofish
and tadpole Shrimp).
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (CVMVCD) - BioControl
Program will incorporate naturally occurring pathogenic, parasitic
and predatory organisms against vectors into existing integrated pest management (IPM) and control programs
currently implemented by the District, thus striving to provide mosquito control
at a practical levels without a noticeable impact on the environment .
